Volunteering with girls in a unit means working alongside other Guiders to plan and lead inclusive meetings and activities, build relationships with girls and caregivers, and create a welcoming environment where girls can explore new experiences, build confidence, and have fun. You may also help organize special events, support cookie sales, and complete simple administrative tasks.
Each unit meeting lasts between 1-2 hours, depending on the age of the girls. Meetings usually include a mix of fun program activities such as games, crafts, science experiments, singing, baking, or anything else you and the girls in your unit wish to try! Our program platform provides a library of fun activities for each age group to explore and earn badges.
You'll be supported every step of the way. Depending on your volunteer role, you may receive training, resources, and guidance to help you feel confident and prepared.
Time commitments vary depending on the volunteer role. Unit Guiders typically spend approximately 3 hours per week planning, preparing, and leading meetings from September to May or June. Some weeks may require additional time for special outings or activities. If you're looking for a more flexible commitment, Girl Guides also offers other volunteer opportunities with different time expectations.
The number of volunteers varies depending on the branch and the needs of the unit. Volunteers work together to plan and facilitate fun activities for girls each week.
No prior Guiding experience is required, just a desire to be part of our vision of a better world, by girls!
After you submit your application, we'll guide you through the volunteer screening process. This includes Orientation to Guiding, a screening interview, reference checks, a Police Record Check, and Safe Guide training. We'll let you know what to do next every step of the way. Read more about the steps we take before safely placing you in a volunteer role.
