Summer
Camps
We still have spaces for campers and volunteers in some Summer Camp programs. http://www.guidesontario.org/camping/summercamps.htm is
the link to view all the great options available.
The senior staff for our Summer Camps recently
took part in a training weekend. Being part of activities
where they shared the songs, events and traditions of each
of their camps was a very moving experience. It made us
realize we are truly on the right path, with a fabulous
group of women taking leadership roles and each camp working
together for a shared experience across Ontario. If you
would like to join our team at camp, check out our volunteer
positions
at http://www.guidesontario.org/camping/volunteer_camp.htm
Camp Property

Membership
Membership Development, your Partner in Registration
Many Guiders have already begun making plans to attract new members to Guiding.
Whether you are planning to attend summer fairs, to book advertising in your
local newspaper or to post flyers throughout your community, the provincial
Membership Development team is set and ready to support you in your plans:
In need
of new Guiders? A Unit Guider volunteer posting has
been created to attract adult women. Throughout the summer, Membership
Development will be targeting adult recruitment to meet the needs
of those units that are at risk of closing due to lack of leaders,
as well as those where they are ready to expand. Currently the
ad is posted on Kijiji, an internet social networking site. Other
uses include posting at local volunteer associations, Charity
Village and local newspaper advertising.
Looking
to advertise? By the end of June, all renewals will
be processed and we will have an accurate picture of returning
girl Members. When planning advertising, these numbers should
be considered. You may find that with returning, advancing and
transferring girls, the unit is near capacity and it may be more
beneficial to advertise for adults instead. The other thing to
consider is how to advertise. Advertising comes in many forms
and is not limited to community newspapers. You may find that
a poster or flyer works best in your community. The Membership
Development team can provide advertising samples, ad placement
and suggest alternate usages. More information on advertising,
including sample ads and how to access provincial funding will
appear in the July/August issue of ONLine.
Planning
a registration event for the fall? You are encouraged
to share your plans with the Membership Development team who
can support you by providing the resources that you will need.
Many of you have commented that membership development happens
locally, and we agree. Provincially, the Membership Development
Adviser and Coordinator are here to help support these local
initiatives. We are always looking for enthusiastic Guiders to
work at the local level, with the support of the provincial team.
We welcome ideas and suggestions. Contact the Membership Development
Adviser at membershipdev.adviser@guidesontario.org or
call the Membership Development Coordinator at 1-877-323-4545,
ext. 2472 for support on your registration initiatives.

Girl Greatness
United Nations Association of Canada National
Roundtable Event
Submitted by: Samantha
Shewring, 2nd Sudbury Rangers, member of the Girl
Advisory Forum
This past March I was lucky to be chosen as one of two girl Members of GGC, Ontario
Council to attend this weekend event held in Gatineau, Quebec. The conference
focused on Youth Engagement, The Affects of the Built Environment on Health,
and the 21st Century Canadian Youth: The Impact of Media and Technology. I learned
a lot about other organizations throughout Canada that I never even knew existed
and about the many partnerships UNAC has, such as MEC and Scouts Canada; aiming
to make the communities safe and healthy. With all the problems we face in the
world, we tend to sometimes ignore the problems right here at home.
I discovered that many people don’t know about all we do in Guiding; they
think we camp and sell cookies! By the end of the weekend they knew we do a whole
lot more around the globe and right here in our own backyards!
The facilitators and people I met took our opinions seriously and I was even
quoted by the guest speaker when I said ‘Every youth has a voice it’s
whether or not you’re willing to open your ears and listen to what they
have to say.’” Attending this conference made me feel like I could
make a difference in my community and those around me. I’m so honoured
that Guiding could give me an opportunity like this. If I, a girl from small
town Sudbury, can take a chance and travel to another province and let her voice
be heard, so can you. Take chances and grab a hold of any opportunity that comes
knocking on your door.

Two New
and Exciting Opportunities for Girls in 2008 - 2009:
1. "Girl EmPower" Advisory Committee
Deadline June 9th
In 2008/2009, Girl Guides of Canada is creating a "Girl EmPower" badge
with the aim of teaching Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders about healthy relationships.
If you are or know a girl 14-18 who's interested in helping other girls develop
a positive self-image and grow up free from violence, this is your chance! GGC
is looking for two girl members to be a part of the Advisory Committee that will
help research girls' needs, design the badge program and decide what the badge
should look like. The time commitment is approximately three hours a month. Interested
girls should complete the attached
form (http://www.guidesontario.org/forms/EmPower form (2).doc)and return
it to Amy Porteous at Ontario Guide House by Monday, June 9. Questions can be
sent to deputypc.girlforum@guidesontario.org.
2. Ontario Council's Girl Advisory Forum
Deadline June 30th
Do you know someone that will be 14-18 years old in September 2008? Do you have
some great ideas for how Guiding in Ontario could be improved? Have them apply
to be a part of Ontario Council's Girl Advisory Forum! The Forum members are
girls from all across Ontario who care about Guiding and want to shape its future.
They communicate by e-mail a few times a week, meet in person at least once a
year, and conduct focus groups with other girls once or twice a year. If you'd
like to make your opinions heard loud and clear next year and help Ontario Council
know what other girls are thinking, this is a great opportunity. Just fill out
the attached
application, (http://www.guidesontario.org/forms/Girl Advisory Forum Application
-08.doc) ask a Guider or former Guider to write you a reference letter, and send
both to Amy Porteous at Ontario Guide House by Monday, June
30. Questions? See the application form and/or e-mail deputypc.girlforum@guidesontario.org.

Program
First
Annual Ranger Weekend!
The new Ranger program is all about choice and flexibility, as well as promoting
leadership and community involvement. That’s why we’re leaving
it up to YOU to decide how you want to take part in the First
Annual Ranger Weekend.
What: The First Annual Ranger Weekend – Rangers
across the country will join together in celebration of the new
Ranger program by planning and participating in community events
Theme: Global
Awareness
When: October 4th and 5th, 2008
Where: In communities all across
the country - will you make it happen in yours?
Who: Young women in the Rangers
program - that includes girls currently in Senior
Branches, Junior Leaders, Cadets or in their
final year of Pathfinders. Don’t forget
to include friends, family, your community and
anyone else you want to involve!
When you’re
considering what you might do for this great new event – with
other girls in your unit or other Rangers across your province/territory/country – consider
the following:
• What does Global Awareness mean to you?
• What is Global Awareness in your community?
• What can you do to raise Global Awareness where you live?
To help you share
ideas and connect with other participants, check out our new Ranger
Weekend website. It’s jam packed with resources to help you
make your event totally amazing.
Go to http://www.girlguides.ca/default1.asp?id=1433.
The Ranger program focuses on "Action", the girl’s participation
in events/activities and their role in leading events/activities. This weekend
is a kick-start for individual girls and units to plan something together for
their own benefit. It will get them involved in the program, provide them with
an opportunity to bond and gel early in the Guiding year and also help to create
some positive opportunities in their community.
If you wish to plan a very large Ranger Weekend in Ontario, get your plan and
budget together and contact event.coord@guidesontario.org.

Sailing the Seas of Change – Eastern Regional Trainers Conference
Ontario Council was well represented by several Trainers attending this March
28-30, 2008 event held in Mahone Bay, NS. Some of the sessions included
an update on the new Safe Guide, The Peace Pin Project, Beans for Bears, (part
of a lively Saturday evening session). A significant amount of time was devoted
to the new Girls United training and what GGC has to aid Guiders on this topic.
This Learning and Development opportunity for Trainers also provided an update
on the concepts of adult learning and emphasized the importance of learning from
each other. Skipper, Charlotte Dornadic. discussed the creativity in us all.
By being creative Trainers and leaders it will help our participants to relax,
gain confidence and have fun. As the saying goes, “if it’s not fun,
it’s not Guiding!” We observed that the new changes in the Safe Guide
coming out in the fall appear to help the Guider in her daily use of the Safe
Guide. As Trainers, it is important that we are able to put together fun, and
informative trainings. The Trainers that were funded by Ontario Council are to
provide their findings and summaries to those that were not able to attend.

Resource
Guiders provide great program enhancement!
Several Ottawa based Guide and Pathfinder units have already taken part in
the PJ Workshop and each participant completed a pair of PJ pants using a sewing
machine! The PJ Ladies’: Jill Marchand, May Coker and Wendy Norman are
well-equipped with 22 sewing machines and a huge inventory of pre-cut flannelette
PJ pants. Assisted by parents, they help participants make a pair of PJ pants
during a 2.5 hour workshop. Workshops are normally run in Lester B. Pearson
High High School on Ogilvie Road, Ottawa but can be conducted at your meeting
place, if the necessary facilities are available. They can occur on a meeting
night or as a special event. For more information and to inquire about booking
a workshop, e-mail pjworkshop@rogers.com.
Cost is normally $10 per participant. We are also prepared to travel afar,
when it fits our schedules but travel expenses are charged. We’d like
to put your girls into new PJ Pants in the near future!!

Spring
Fling, Hanover - Community 5
On April 19th over 80 Guiders, including Trefoil and Senior Branch members,
gathered for a sunny Spring Fling in Hanover. Marnie Cumming, the Provincial
Commissioner attended and made time to speak to many of those in attendance
one on one. Our Members learned great program tips for doing the Western Hemisphere
and Chocolate challenges. Others learned handy camp tips and some first-timers
attended Orientation, and finance training was offered as well. Devoted Trefoil
members did lunch prep and clean up! Thanks to Energizer of Walkerton for their
generous donation of snazzy razors and princess flashlights for Guiders and
their girls! An impromptu penny table raised $90.00 for the Dominica twinning
and some generous Guiders donated lots of badges and program materials for
the Dominica Guides.
We had such a

In April we held the two 5 Region Challenge Days; one for Sparks,
Brownies and one for Guides and Pathfinders. This was the 3rd
year and we expanded to
include all of Community 5 & 7 and in total nearly 200 girls and their
Guiders attended! Asia Pacific Region was the focus and we had presentations,
singing, games and food from various countries and all that participated earned
the crest. We can’t wait until next year to do it all over again for
the Arab Region!

Trefoil Guild in Thunder Bay moves into Action!
To help the girls get ready for the camping season ahead, we prepared the Guiding
Granny Outdoor Challenge (adapted from NFLD website) for Sparks, Brownies and
Guides. 162 girls from 10 Units signed up for the two-part challenge throughout
the spring, Trefoil members attended Unit meetings to present Part 1 of the
challenge and on Saturday May 10th when all the girls came together for a day-long
event they completed part two; learned camping and outdoor skills. All participants
were provided with a special Guiding Granny crest. Contact Carol Daley through
adult.admin@guidesontario.org if you wish more information on this adapted
challenge.
To promote a
healthy lifestyle for our Guild Members, we have started a weekly
walking group – we hope to “walk Thunder Bay” by
exploring all the City’s recreational trails.

Do
you know someone that isn’t getting ONLine?
Perhaps
she has her filter set too high on her computer and the ONLine

Perhaps we have
an out of date e-mail address for her in iMIS and she can update
it as follows:
Unit Guider – contact the Unit Administrator in your Community Trefoil
or Link Members – contact adult.admin@guidesontario.org
