Are you looking to enhance your unit program? Requesting a Resource Guider is a great option! Resource Guiders are adult members of Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council with specialized skills that enjoy working with girls but require a flexible Guiding commitment.

To request a Resource Guider from the list below, click on the Book Now button and complete the online request form. You will receive confirmation of your request and will be contacted by the Resource Guider within seven days to arrange your activity.

Empowerment and Playfulness Through Yoga

Yoga can be Empowering and Playful! During the yoga session, the girls will be introduced to the benefits of yoga and will have the opportunity to move their bodies.
Girls will have the opportunity to explore how yoga can help them in their own lives through movement and play. The session will vary and will be geared to the age of the group. Activities within the session can include the following:
  • Meditation and breathing exercises
  • Journaling exercises and group sharing
  • The physical practice of yoga

Adventures with Geocaching

Location: Unit Meeting Place: Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan, Aurora, Newmarket and Stouffville
Suitable For: : Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers
Cost for creating swag: Minimal. Swag is one small craft item per girl, e.g. bead pet, muggle kit (small baggie, small rock, 2" of orange ribbon, safety pin), etc.
Estimate: Less than $20/unit.
Cost for creating a geocache: swag cost is the same, plus a container (e.g. medium-sized Lock and Lock) at $10-15, camo tape at $5, and logbook at $2. The phone app needed is free, as is joining the website and listing the geocache.
Estimate: Less than $40/unit.

Have you wanted to give geocaching a try with your unit but don't know where to begin? Have you found geocaches but would like to create and hide one? This activity can be: going on a hike and finding a geocache, learning about GPS devices and how to use available tools like your phone to find them, creating and trading swag, geocaching etiquette including online logging, and what types of caches there are.
If you're interested in hiding a geocache with your unit, that can be done as a separate, single session. Learn where caches cannot be placed, what makes a good container, how to get accurate coordinates, and how to create a listing. Hiding a cache is lots of fun!

Take action towards global and environmental service and learn about international issues and women's issues through this workshop. The main activity entails producing and packing sustainable, washable, cloth-based menstrual hygiene kits for girls who need them in Canada and in developing countries around the globe. Days for Girls aims to provide a dignified and educated approach to menstrual hygiene that will allow all girls to participate fully and achieve their potential in education and civil life. Participants will learn about the project and the regions in which kit distributions have taken place. They will also learn to accurately measure, cut fabric and use a serger and a sewing machine.

Introduction to Astronomy

Location: Sudbury, willing to travel within a 2 hour radius. Doe Lake is within reason.

While learning to recognize constellations and planets, one also learns to orient themselves without the use of a compass or GPS. There is a sense of awe that comes from connecting with nature, recognizing our place in the cosmos and appreciating the connection between lore and culture.
I review use of planispheres and sky maps and participants are used to create a solar system and a galaxy. Power point presentations are available on a number of subjects. Two styles of telescopes are provided for demonstration purposes. If a clear night sky is available, a night sky tour will be conducted. The focus is on visual astronomy, naked eye, with binoculars and finally with telescope(s). If there is enough time there will be a craft.

Engineers and artists solder in the day-to-day lives. Soldering is the process of joining two or more metal objects with molten metal. Soldering is used in electronics projects to attach batteries, resistors and LEDs together. Safety glasses will be provided. In this activity, girls will be soldering together their own electronics trinket that they will be able to take home and hang up on their walls!

Rag Quilts for CHEO

Location: Unit Meeting Place: Kanata, Nepean, Ottawa, Orleans, Cumberland and Gatineau

We would like to make at least ten quilts to donate to CHEO in 2015/2016. Pathfinders and Rangers can request a workshop to learn how to make a rag quilt that will be donated. In the two hour workshop, you will learn how to sew and finish a rag quilt made of flannel. Please note that the quilt you started may not be the one you finish in the workshop. With supervision, you will have an opportunity to sew, pin and fringe a quilt. All supplies are provided. Unit must provide sufficient supervision and workshop leaders are not to be included in the supervisory numbers. Number of girls – 10 (Maximum per workshop) Number of adult supervisors – 5 (no experience needed) Participants must wear shoes for this workshop and no food or drink around the machines or work area. When completing request form, please provide 3 dates suitable for your group.
